Eugene C. Gartland, Jr.
(Chuck Gartland)

Professor of Mathematics

Kent State University

Temporary Program Director
Division of Mathematical Sciences

National Science Foundation

As of August 2014, I am on leave from Kent State University, working as a Temporary Program Director (or "Rotator") at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, VA (Division of Mathematical Sciences, Applied Mathematics Program).  For help, please contact the KSU Math Main Office at 330-672-2430.

My home department is the Department of Mathematical Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State University. The Department offers degree programs at the bachelor, masters, and doctoral levels in mathematics and applied mathematics. I am actively involved in the Applied Mathematics Program.

My training is in numerical analysis. My current interests are in the areas of computational applied mathematics, in general, and computational problems in liquid crystals, in particular. My interest in liquid crystals stems from the fact that there exists at Kent a major research institute devoted to their study: the Liquid Crystal Institute (LCI).

I was a member of the program faculty of the Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program (CPIP) for 18 years (1996-2013).  I also served for 4 years (2000-2004) as Treasurer of the International Liquid Crystal Society (ILCS), a professional organization with nearly 1,000 members, from more that 40 countries.

More information about administration, awards, grants, publications, and students is available in my short vita.
