Mark L. Lewis
I
am a professor in mathematics here at Kent State University. My area expertise is the
character theory of finite groups. The much of my research regards
solvable groups, and all of my early work was in solvable groups, but lately I
have also published some results regarding nonsolvable
groups mostly in collaboration with Don
White. I also have dabbled a little bit with permutation
groups. A list of my papers can be at my publications.

I am active in the Kent State algebra seminar.
I have been at Kent State since August 1996. I graduated in 1990 with a
BS in mathematics from Iowa State University. (I am a third
generation Iowa State graduate.) I graduated in 1995 with my Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My advisor was
I. Martin Isaacs. After graduation, I returned to Iowa
State as a Temporary Instructor for the 1995-1996 academic year.
I came to Kent State as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the 1996-1997
academic year. In 1997, I was hired as an
Assistant Professor. In 2001, I was tenured and promoted to Associate
Professor, and in 2007, I was promoted to Professor.
In the Fall of 1996, I taught graph theory and combinatorics, and in the spring, I had calculus I. During
the 1997-1998 academic year, I taught the graduate
algebra course. For the 1998-1999 academic year, I
taught the honors calculus and the ring theory course. In 1999-2000, I taught a
section of calculus I and a section of calculus II in the Fall,
in the Spring, I again had the honors section of calculus II, and during the
Summer, I had graph theory and combinatorics. For the
2000-2001 academic year, I taught modern algebra. In
the fall, I also taught a section of the course we were calling math for
architecture. This course has since become calculus with precalculus.
In the spring, my second course was a section of linear algebra. For the
2001-2002 academic year, my responsibility was honors
calculus for the whole year and two graduate courses: group theory in the Fall
and character theory in the Spring. During the summer of 2002, I had a research
and creative activities grant from RAGS, so I had no teaching responsibilities.
In the 2002-2003 academic year, I had ring theory for
the whole year. I had honors calculus I in the Fall,
and linear algebra and fundamental concepts in algebra in the Spring. In the Summer 2003, I taught number theory in Summer I and calculus
I in Summer II. For the 2003-2004 academic year, I had
modern algebra. In the Fall, I taught calculus I. In
the Spring, I taught both sections of calculus III.
For Summer 2004, I again taught number theory, and
also calculus II. For Fall 2004, I was on sabbatical,
and in the spring of 2005, I took a research semester. I also began serving as
graduate coordinator in the Spring 2005. During Summer 2005, I taught calculus II. For Fall
2005, I taught honors calculus I and ring theory. In Spring
2006, I had number theory. In Summer 2006, I taught
calculus I and number theory (again). For Fall 2006, I
had group theory, and for Spring 2007, I had character theory. For Summer 2007, I cotaught the MIME
Number theory class with Anne Reynolds from Math Education during Summer I. In
addition, I had calculus I in Summer II. My term as graduate coordinator ended
with the end of the Summer 2007 term. During Fall 2007, I was on medical leave. For Spring
2008, I taught linear algebra and numbers and games. For Summer
2008, I taught calculus I in Summer II. I taught Honors calculus and the
graduate algebra course during the 2008-2009 academic year.
I am taking a break from teaching during the summer 2009. For the 2009-2010
academic year, I taught Calculus I and II and
the abstract algebra sequence (the undergraduate course). Again, I took a
break from teaching during the summer 2010. For the 2010-2011 academic year, I taught Calculus I and Calculus III in the fall and
the graduate ring theory sequence both semesters. For a third time, I
took a break from teaching during the summer 2011 (notice a theme
here?). For the Fall 2011, I am
teaching Calc I. In the Spring
2011, I am expecting to teach Number Theory and Modern Algebra I.
