1.3    Vocabulary for Absolute Value Equations and Functions                            

 

Absolute Value:  The value of a number without the sign:   For a positive number, the absolute value is the number itself.  For a negative number, the absolute value is its opposite (i.e. a positive number).  The absolute value of 0 is 0.   We use the symbol    to indicate absolute value.

 

 

                                 

 

 

Distance on the Number Line:

The number of spaces between two points on the number line WITHOUT RESPECT TO DIRECTION.  The distance between  and  is 12 and the distance between  and  is 12.
