Choose Ohio First Scholarship

About the Program

Choose Ohio First Scholarships will annually provide about 20 undergraduate scholarships, varying in size between $1,500 and $4,700 a year, to promising incoming STEM students who intend to take a Calculus sequence (12011, 12012, 12021 or approved substitutes) and a Linear Algebra course (21001 or approved substitutes) during their studies.  The scholarships were made possible by a grant from Ohio Board of Regents awarded to the consortium of six partnering institutions - Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Cuyahoga Community College, Kent State University, University of Akron, and Youngstown University.


Eligibility (for incoming freshmen)
To be eligible for the scholarship you must:

  • Intend to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, chemistry, geology, geography, physics, mathematics, biology, medicine, integrated math, integrated science, or intergrated life sciences.
  • Plan to take Calculus I and II in the first year, Calculus III in the second, and Linear Algebra course in your second or third year.
  • Be a U.S. permanent resident.
  • Reside in Ohio.
  • Be ready to take a calculus course in fall 2009 (Math ACT score of at least 27, Math SAT score of 620 or above).  You may also qualify by achieving a Math ACT score of at least 23 (Math SAT of 540) and scoring high on the Compass placement test.

Eligibility (for sophomores)
To be eligible for the scholarship you must:

  • Be progressing toward completing a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, chemistry, geology, geography, physics, mathematics, biology, medicine, integrated math, integrated science, or integrated life sciences with a GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Have passed Calculus I and II.
  • Plan to take Calculus III in your second year and a Linear Algebra course in your second or third year.
  • Be a U.S. permanent resident.
  • Reside in Ohio.


 Application Process

The application includes the student's academic record, a letter of recommendation from a math teacher, and a short one page essay written by the applicant.  The essay should discuss the applicant's science abilities, what he or she has learned about the field, what strengths and weaknesses the student possesses, and what the student's aspirations are for a science career.  Applicants will be judged based on their financial need, academic record, letters of recommendation, and essay. 


Scholarship Obligations

Student recipients of a Choose Ohio First Scholarship are required to remain in good academic standing within their STEM major with a GPA of at least 3.0 progressing toward completing the degree in four years, pass Calculus I and II in their first year, Calculus III in their second year, and a Linear Alegbra course in their second or third year; and participate in Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program's social and mentoring activities, which may include a poster session.  The scholarship amount will be re-evaluated every year based on the student's financial need.
