Math 72295: ST: Numerical Methods for the Physical Sciences
TIME/PLACE: TTh 11:00-12:15, 211 MSB
TEXT: TBD
INSTRUCTOR:
PRE-REQUISITES:
- essential:
- ODEs ( --> Calculus, Linear Algebra)
- Computer Programming ...
- recommended:
- PDEs or Math Physics (heat, wave, Laplace eqn's; Fourier series; separation of variables)
COURSE OUTLINE:
- ODEs (5 weeks)
- PDEs: parabolic (heat conduction, diffusion), elliptic (equilibrium) (6 weeks)
- PDEs: hyperbolic (wave propagation) (4 weeks)
CLASS OPERATION:
- Homework (from exercises in the text or problems integrated with
the
lectures)
will be assigned regularly and collected periodically (with one week
notice).
It will be graded and returned. It will count towards the final
course
grade (35%).
- 3 Numerical Experiments will be assigned. They will be graded
and
returned
and will count towards the final grade (20%, 20%, 25%).
- No exams.
- The
Final-Exam period for the course (Thur, May 14, 12:45-3:00) will be
used for presentations and discussions of the final numerical projects.
GRADES: Homework (35%), Numerical Experiments (65%).
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT: The
official registration deadline for this course is February 1,
2009. University policy requires all students to be officially
registered in each class they are attending. Students who are not
officially registered for a course by published deadlines should not be
attending classes and will not receive credit or a grade for the
course. Each student must confirm enrollment by checking his/her
class schedule (using Student Tools in FlashFast) prior to the deadline
indicated. Registration errors must be corrected prior to the
deadline.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: University
policy 3342-3-01.3 requires that students with disabilities be provided
reasonable accommodations to ensure their equal access to course
content. If you have a documented disability and require
accommodations, please contact the instructor at the beginning of the
semester to make arrangements for necessary classroom
adjustments. Please note, you must first verify your eligibility
for these through Student Accessibility Services (contact 330-672-3391
or visit www.kent.edu/sas for
more information on registration procedures).
