Linear Algebra – MATH 21001

General:

This course mainly treats systems of linear equations, matrices and vector spaces. These mathematical beings may appear very different from what has been covered in calculus classes. Getting acquainted to them requires a new strong effort, including attendance and seriousness about homework-duties.

Course Content:

The core-sections we are going to work on are, in this order,
1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.5, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 4.6, 3.4, 7.1.
Once these sections have been treated we will work on some optional ones, which will then be determined.

 
Exams:

• There will be three regular exams, each worth 100 points. They will be held on Monday, February 9, Friday, March 12 and Wednesday, April 14 – subject to change with notice.
• There will be one final exam, worth 200 points. The final exam will be split into two parts: one part will treat the classes taught after the third exam, the other part will be comprehensive over the entire course.
• Finally there will be about ten home-take exams, each worth about 20 points.

 
Other:

• Students have to take the exams with the rest of the class. Otherwise the exam will be counted as a 0. Only serious, well documented and timely submitted reasons will be accepted if a student requests an exception to this rule.

• No calculators will be allowed during the exams.
• Cheating on exams will not be tolerated and may entail consequences up to eviction from university.
• Students with disabilities who require special accommodations should contact me during the first week of classes.
