| AB | Face representation (FR) plays a typically important role in face recognition and methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) have been received wide attention recently. However, despite of the achieved successes, these FR methods will inevitably lead to poor classification performance in case of great facial variations such as expression, lighting, occlusion and so on, due to the fact that the image gray value matrices on which they manipulate are very sensitive to these facial variations. In this paper, we take notice of the facts that every image matrix can always have the well-known singular value decomposition (SVD) and can be regarded as a composition of a set of base images generated by SVD, and we further point out that the leading base images (those corresponding to large singular values) on one hand are sensitive to the aforementioned facial variations and on the other hand dominate the composition of the face image. Then based on these observations, we subtly deflate the weights of the facial variation sensitive base images by a parameter a and propose a novel fractional order singular value decomposition representation (FSVDR) to alleviate facial variations for face recognition. Finally, our experimental results show that FSVDR can: (1) effectively alleviate facial variations; and (2) form an intermediate representation for many FR methods such as PCA and LDA to significantly improve their classification performance in case of great facial variations. | AB | It is well established that genetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, a common condition characterized by reduced bone mass and increased fracture risk. The major histocompatibility complex in humans, known as human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region, is the most polymorphic human genetic system and it is known as a cluster of genetic markers, associated with several diseases. In order to evaluate the contribution of HLA alleles in bone mass loss, polymorphisms in the HLA class I (-A, -B and -Cw) and class II (-DR and -DQ) antigens were studied in 126 postmenopausal women of Greek origin. It was found that HLA-B7 (P = 0.069), -DR15 (P = 0.019) and -DQ6 (P = 0.026) were associated with a lower bone mineral density measured at the forearm. This study shows a significant association between HLA alleles and bone mass loss in the population studied. |

| AB | Objectives: In recent years, great progress has been made in the
development of diagnostic tools, therapeutic approaches, and validated
outcome measures in the understanding of the pathogenesis of ankylosing
spondylitis (AS). The purpose of this review was to summarize these
developments. Methods: We performed a PubMed search for the period 1978 to 2005, using the keyword, "ankylosing spondylitis," resulting in a total of 4878 publications, including 778 reviews. Articles were then selected based on their discussion of recent diagnostic tools and new treatment approaches in the pathogenesis of AS, leading to a final total of 104 articles. Results: In recent years, there have been 2 major developments in the management of AS that make earlier diagnosis possible and offer the hope of alleviating pain and preventing structural changes that result in loss of function. These developments include the use of magnetic resonance imaging to visualize the inflammatory changes in the sacroiliac joint and the axial spine, and the demonstration that tumor necrosis factor blocking agents are highly efficacious in reducing spinal inflammation and possibly in slowing radiographic progression. Conclusions: There have been major advances in both the diagnostic tools and the therapeutic regimens available for patients with AS. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. |

We discuss various kinds of statistical convergence and I-convergence for sequences of functions with values in R or in a metric space. For real valued measurable functions defined on a measure space (X, M, mu), we obtain a statistical version of the Egorov theorem (when mu(X) < infinity). We show that, in its assertion, equi-statistical convergence on a big set cannot be replaced by uniform statistical convergence. Also, we consider statistical convergence in measure and I-convergence in measure, with some consequences of the Riesz theorem. | AB | Generalized linear models (GLMs) have been used quite effectively in the modeling of a mean response under nonstandard conditions, where discrete as well as continuous data distributions can be accommodated. The choice of design for a GLM is a very important task in the development and building of an adequate model. However, one major problem that handicaps the construction of a GLM design is its dependence on the unknown parameters of the fitted model. Several approaches have been proposed in the past 25 years to solve this problem. These approaches, however, have provided only partial solutions that apply in only some special cases, and the problem, in general, remains largely unresolved. The purpose of this article is to focus attention on the aforementioned dependence problem. We provide a survey of various existing techniques dealing with the dependence problem. This survey includes discussions concerning locally optimal designs, sequential designs, Bayesian designs and the quantile dispersion graph approach for comparing designs for GLMs. |

| AB | We introduce a sequence of positive linear operators including many integral type generalizations of well known operators. Using the concept of statistical convergence we obtain some Korovkin type approximation theorems for those operators, and compute the rates of statistical convergence. Furthermore, we deal with the local approximation and the rth order generalization of our operators. |

| AB | This series of articles on ankylosing spondylitis (AS) provides insight into the burden of disease and focuses on early diagnosis and effective management. AS leads to progressive functional impairment over time and has tremendous impact on society at large in terms of economic costs and indirect costs associated with physical impairment and loss of employment. Early diagnosis is crucial now that we have more effective therapy with tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists, which suppress disease activity and improve the functional ability of patients whose disease is refractory to conventional drug therapy. Early identification. of variables that help predict severe disease with bad functional prognosis is needed. If biological therapy with TNF inhibitors is proven to retard disease progression and prevent or delay functional limitations, insight into such prognosticators will help us offer the correct treatment to the correct patient at the correct time. There is also a need to demonstrate longterm benefits of such a therapy as well as a favorable cost/benetit ratio to help convince healthcare authorities, insurance companies, and others of the utility of these drugs for treating patients with AS refractory to conventional drug therapy. |

| AB | The acute as well as chronic clinical features of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) are a burden to the patient and society. Apart from the axial and articular manifestations, extraarticular AS-related comorbidities such as uveitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis contribute to the burden of the disease. In addition, a large proportion of patients have osteoporosis or osteopenia, which may be associated with fractures and contribute to kyphosis. All these features result in decreased quality of life. Moreover, patients with AS have an increased mortality rate. The impact of this disease also can be seen in various aspects of workforce participation, from requiring more assistance at paid work to withdrawal from the workforce. Further, patients with AS and, subsequently, society are affected by substantial healthcare costs related to medications and healthcare provider expenses. Early diagnosis and management of patients will likely prevent functional disability and improve patient outcomes. |

| AB | This article focuses on the early diagnosis and effective management of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a disease that is not uncommon and that can cause early retirement and severe functional disability. AS, like most other rheumatologic diseases, has no diagnostic gold standard. Correct diagnosis depends largely on a constellation of clinical symptoms and signs in addition to radiological findings. Early diagnosis has become all the more important because effective therapies are available: tumor necrosis factor antagonists that suppress disease activity and improve functional ability in patients with AS refractory to conventional drug therapy. The biologic agents are probably even more effective if given early. Inflammation of the sacroiliac joints and the spine is a common, early feature and possibly the most frequent first manifestation of disease. Therefore, its early detection is important, and magnetic resonance imaging has proven useful in this regard. To optimize diagnostic accuracy of early disease, it is crucial to use a comprehensive approach and have a deep understanding of the disease and its clinical picture. The clinician should gather a complete history, paying close attention to all the elements of this multisystem disease, as well as judiciously ordering laboratory testing and imaging. New strategies are being developed to assist primary care physicians in their screening for these patients, which in turn should result in early referral to rheumatologists and early diagnosis. |

| AB | In this paper, the pointwise approximation properties of Beta operators (B) over bar (n) are studied to the bounded functions and the absolutely continuous functions, respectively. First, we use the asymptotic form of the central limit theorem in probability theory to derive an asymptotic estimate on the rate of convergence of Beta operators (B) over tilde (n) for the bounded functions. Next, we give the optimal estimate on the first-order absolute moment of the Beta operators B-n(vertical bar t - x vertical bar, x) by direct computations. Then, we use this estimate and Bojanic-Cheng-Khan's method combining with some analysis techniques to derive an asymptotically optimal estimate on the rate of convergence of Beta operators (B) over bar (n) for the absolutely continuous functions. | AB | We designed a set of 35 polymerase chain reaction sequence- specific primers ( PCR- SSP) in 29 SSP mixtures to assign 29 HLA- B* 27 4- digit level alleles ( B* 2701- B* 2721 and B* 2723- B* 2730). This was used in conjunction with our 41 PCR- SSP primer mixture low- resolution HLA- B typing set to fully differentiate B* 27 from all other HLA- B alleles. Successful typing set validation used 521 B* 27 samples covering 13 ( B* 2701- B* 2710 and B* 2712, B* 2717, B* 2723) alleles. The distribution of B* 27 alleles was determined in a random population of 4020 local blood donors and the use of PCR- SSP B* 27 typing in our routine flow cytometry- based HLA- B27/ B2708 typing strategy is described. |

Moricz, Tauberian theorems for Cesaro summable double sequences, Studia Math. 110 (1994) 83-96], Moricz has proved some Tauberian theorems for Cesaro summable double sequences and deduced the Tauberian theorems of Landau [E. Landau, Uber die Bedeutung einiger neuerer Grenzwertsatze der Herren Hardy and Axer, Prac. Mat.-Fiz. 21 (1910) 97-177] and Hardy [G.H. Hardy, Divergent Series, Univ. Press, Oxford 1956] type. In [J.A. Fridy, M.K. Khan, Statistical extension of some classical Tauberian theorems, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 128 (2000) 2347-2355], Fridy and Khan have given statistical extensions of some classical Tauberian theorems. The concept of statistical convergence for double sequences has recently been introduced by Mursaleen and Edely [M. Mursaleen, Osama H. H. Edely, Statistical convergence of double sequences, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 288 (2003) 223-231] and by Moricz [F. Moricz, Statistical convergence of multiple sequences, Arch. Math. 81 (2003) 82-89] independently. In this paper we give some Tauberian theorems for statistically convergent double sequences. We have also provided some examples including an example to Problem I of Moricz [F. Moricz, Tauberian theorems for Cesaro summable double sequences, Studia Math. 110 (1994) 83-96]. (c) 2005 Published by Elsevier Inc. |
