Now, to be honest, I have never noticed a bell on someone's bike, but read
about this online at another motorcyclist's site and love the legend.
Some of you may have actually seen these little bells hanging on
someone's motorcycle and wondered why it was there. (No, it's not
because they think that every time they ride their bike an angel gets
it's wings.) The bells hanging from motorcycles are called "Gremlin
Bells", and they are hung on the bike to ward off (or get rid of) evil
road spirits. Yes... you heard me... evil spirits... as in GREMLINS.
Just like the gremlins that used to plague fighter planes in the war and
bugs bunny, they have now migrated to motorcycles. Motorcycle gremlins
LOVE to ride, but no matter how much you love to have passengers on your
bike with you, you don't want these ones. They love to cause all sorts
of problems for you while you are riding. Some say they are responsible
for that time that you stalled going around that corner, or for that guy
who cut you off on the highway... or that time when your foot slipped on
the gravel and you dropped your bike in front of an entire church full
of people just coming out of Sunday service. (I wonder who that happened
to?) What about the time you ran over that roadkill? Yup... that was a
gremlin who was helping steer your bike. And the time that your blinker
just stopped working for no reason and you had to go the rest of the way
home using hand signals? Yup. Gremlins too.
So you Know what you need? A GREMLIN BELL. Gremlin bells ward off
these attacks from the little gremlins, and also won't allow any more to
get onto your bike. Gremlins can't stand the sound of a ringing bell so
they won't come near you when they hear it. If you already have some
gremlins riding with you, they will get trapped in the hollow of the
bell, and the constant ringing will drive them insane – causing them to
lose their grip and fall to the roadway. (Have you ever wondered how
potholes are formed? The legend has it that they have so much evil
energy that when they fall to the roadway they cause potholes when they
hit. This is evidence that the bell has served its purpose.) That's why
it's best to hang your bell low on your bike so that they don't fall
back onto another part of your bike.
Do you have the protection of a gremlin bell? If you buy a gremlin
bell of your own, the power works ok. BUT... If you receive the gremlin
bell as a gift – the powerful magic of the bell is doubled. The
power of the bell is even more enhanced if a well-seasoned traveler
gives it to you. Do you have a friend who does not have a gremlin bell
yet? Then be a good friend and give them one, they'll thank you! The
bell (and of course a good preventive maintenance program) will help
keep away all those pesky little gremlins.
Polishing the Bell
It has been a tradition among some of us for a long time to
attach a brass bell to our left swing arm, to remember our
brothers and sisters who have gone down riding. It’s a small thing, but
the reason a brass bell is chosen is that, as we ride, it gets dirty and
tarnished. Every time we get down to wash and polish it, we are reminded
of friends lost, and our thoughts turn to the meaning of being in the
wind. As we ride and hear the bell ring, we know that our brothers and
sisters are riding with us, and how easy it would be to join them with a
single mistake. And maybe, just maybe, the next time a situation
comes up; they will be there to help us...as long as we remember them by
polishing the bell.
